Fraunhofer Gesellschaft zur Förderung der angewandten Forschung e.V. is the largest application-oriented research organization in Europe. The company participates to HDFI by means of its Fraunhofer Institute for Integrated Circuits IIS (Fraunhofer IIS), which has been working in audio and image coding as well as signal processing for more than 25 years. Fraunhofer IIS is the main inventor of mp3 and is universally credited with the co-development of AAC (Advanced Audio Coding). Fraunhofer estimates that it is enabling more than ten billion commercial products worldwide with these codecs.
